Do Lowchen Shed? | What It’s Really Like to Live With Them

One of the questions we are asked most often is whether Lowchen shed—and the short answer is: very little.
However, there’s a bit more to understand, especially if you’re new to the breed.
A Low-Shedding Coat
Lowchen have a coat that grows continuously rather than shedding heavily like many other breeds.
In day-to-day life, this means:
Very little loose hair around the home
Less noticeable shedding on furniture and clothing
For many families, this is one of the things that makes the breed so appealing.
What This Means in Practice
While they are low-shedding, Lowchen are not “low maintenance.”
Because their coat keeps growing, it requires:
Regular brushing to prevent tangles
Routine grooming or clipping
Ongoing attention to coat care
Without this, the coat can quickly become difficult to manage.
Grooming as Part of the Routine
Many of our puppy families find that grooming becomes a natural part of life with a Lowchen.
Some choose to:
Keep a shorter, practical trim
Maintain a longer coat with regular brushing
Occasionally use the traditional lion clip
There is flexibility, but consistency is key.
A Good Fit for the Right Home
Lowchen can be an excellent choice for those who:
Prefer a cleaner home environment
Are happy to commit to regular grooming
Enjoy the hands-on aspect of coat care
Final Thoughts
Lowchen are a low-shedding breed, but they do require ongoing grooming to keep them comfortable and looking their best.
For many people, this is a small trade-off for such a wonderful companion.
